THE LETTERS OF THE ORIGINAL WOODEN CARVING OF OUR LADY OF CANDELARIA OF CANARY ISLANDS ACCORDING THE PRINTED DOCUMENTARY SOURCES

Abstract

The wooden carving of Our Lady of Candelaria, discovered in the municipality of the same name in the island of Tenerife (Canary Islands) during the first half of the fifteenth century, had nearly two hundred letters of the Latin alphabet inscribed on her garments. Unfortunately the original carving is not available for inspection. It disappeared after the storm that took place on the 7th and 8th of November, 1826, in Tenerife. The only way left for us to know which letters were inscribed on the statue is by analysing the artistic work that represented it later on, as well as by being granted access to the either written or printed documentary sources dealing with them. The latter will be our chosen method in this paper.
