Abstract

Medialab Prado is a successful cultural center located in the Serrería Belga, one example of industrial architecture from the beginning of the twentieth century in downtown Madrid, which underwent an intervention to host the cultural program about a decade ago. The authorities are now planning to move Medialab Prado from its current location, but there are many voices against it, which has raised the question of how both the building and its use are valued. This paper presents and analyses the situation, still unfolding, to start a conversation about what we consider heritage and how to act with listing and policies in the context of an accelerating society, in which the period between a building completion and its protection is becoming progressively shorter.
