Abstract
More than 25% of all known plant viruses are known to be transmitted through seeds. The list includes many that infect pepper and spread from parents to offspring either by invading the seed embryo (seed-transmitted viruses) or by contaminating the seed coat (seed-borne viruses). Seed transmission provides viruses with the capacity to survive for long periods of time when conditions are unfavorable and with a means to disperse over long distances. Consequently, infected seeds are a major source of primary inoculum being at the root of devastating epidemics. The importance of this mode of transmission has attracted the attention of plant virologists for decades, resulting in a body of work studying the mechanisms of seed transmission and its epidemiological and ecological consequences. In parallel, seed health methods and regulations have been implemented. Despite this effort, there are still key aspects of virus seed transmission that remain understudied. This chapter summarizes what is known and what is unknown about seed transmission, particularly focusing on pepper viruses. © 2024 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
