Abstract

In project management, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are frequently used as tools for the organization, storage, manipulation, analysis, and modeling of data that facilitate decision making and the dissemination of results. In this research, this tool is presented in the novel area of responsible consumption and the problem of food waste, for the calculation of the Carbon Footprint as an indicator in relation to Climate Change and the Sustainable Development Goals. The designed GIS is applied to the projects and activities of the Food Banks of Spain as civil society entities that provide benefits from various dimensions: social, economic, and environmental. The results allow us to learn more about the environmental dimension of the Food Banks, beginning the design of a Carbon Footprint Observatory linked to the Geographic Information System to estimate, contrast, and publish results and show their contribution to sustainable development.
