Abstract

The live exploration of the classicalruins allowedAlison and Peter Smithson to gain a deeper understanding of theirmechanisms of implantation in the territory. Guided by the theories, first of Rex Martienssen and, later, of Vincent Scully, these English architects examined, for more than 25 years, the ancient Greek and Roman cities scattered in different parts of the Mediterranean, disclosing the importance of the landscape in shaping their layouts. This article explores this deep incursion into the ancient world through an unpublished project undertaken byAlison in the last years ofher career, titled "The Siting of Buildings". This work, which consists of an extensive set of evocative texts, drawings and photographs, reveals the fascination the Smithsons felt for the topographical siting: a "marvellous and instinctive"sense ofplacement which they discovered in the classical traces and which contributed to strengthening their conviction in an architecture intimately linked to the specific conditions of the site.
