Abstract
This work focused on studying these interactions through laboratory bioassays to characterize the effects of native isolates of entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) on the larvae of Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith) at the pathogenic and molecular levels. In addition, through the ingestion of EPNs-treated diet, their non-target effects on larvae of the generalist predator Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens) were also studied. Molecular characterization revealed that the EPN isolates tested corresponded to Oscheius myriophilus (Poinar) and Rhabditis spp. Infection of the S. frugiperda larvae with both EPNs produced high mortality (up to 56.52%) with different results in the rate of death according to median time to death analysis. Similarly, ingestion by the predator mediated by a treated diet triggered lethal effects on the preimaginal parameters of C. carnea. In this study, it was demonstrated that the use of native isolates of EPNs for the control of S. frugiperda is a strategy that can be applied for the management of this insect. © 2024 Southwestern Entomological Society.
