Abstract

This work introduces SPECTRE (Spectral Python Engine for Computational Transfer and Radiative Exchange), an open-source, two-dimensional, multispectral solver for the radiative transfer equation (RTE) designed to model light-tissue interactions in medical applications. The solver addresses both forward and inverse problems of the RTE in heterogeneous domains, focusing on solving both the distribution of light inside the tissue as well as the recovery of the optical properties from the captured multiespectral information in clinical and research applications. Furthermore, the solver is validated against state-of-the-art Monte Carlo simulations, achieving a seven-fold speedup in multiespectral scenarios within the experiments presented in this work. The results demonstrate the proposed solver as an alternative to Monte Carlo methods for modeling light-tissue interactions.
