Abstract
Cinema, although it was sometimes biased by censorship, is a faithful reflection of Ma-drid in the 1950s and the great problem of access to decent housing for the working class, due to the massive rural exodus. The film is a historical-critical document of the transformation of the city and of people's despair and degradation in the face of this problem. This lack of housing forms a crucial part of the plot of the films in which they are camouflaged behind the parody, criticism and denunciation of the lack of housing, with situations such as overcrowding in corralas, the re-renting of rooms, eviction, shan-ty towns and substandard housing, as well as the new social housing neighbourhoods. The research includes analyses of films of the period and more contemporary docu-mentaries that help us to create an architectural imaginary that turns cinema into a strategy of visual memory.
