Abstract

Every process involving human interaction is susceptible to introducing errors. When an error occurs (whether human or machine-induced), it is essential to minimize its potential impact on the task at hand through appropriate mitigation measures. The Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP) contains crucial information for airlines, air navigation and airport operations. AIP publication is a process primarily conducted by human operators and is therefore susceptible of erroneous data or elements. The goal of this research is to develop an Artificial Intelligence (AI) application to increase human detection of errors as a mitigation measure for quality assurance. The methodology involves evaluating discrepancies between documents generated by the Airspace Team, which designs air navigation procedures, and pre-publication documents, prior to the final version being published in the AIP, prepared by the Aeronautical Information Team. This study leverages current AI technology, specifically utilizing AI-powered search and analysis capabilities that can review and compare documents. Multiple AI enablers were benchmarked to identify the best tool for aviation documentation reviewing processes. Its foundation is a set of customized questions to identify differences between document versions and was refined for different aeronautical charts and documentation types. The results shows that the proposed approach successfully identifies concurrences between aeronautical documents, thereby providing a robust framework for error detection and quality assurance in aeronautical information management.

Impact and social visibility

From the perspective of influence or social adoption, and based on metrics associated with mentions and interactions provided by agencies specializing in calculating the so-called "Alternative or Social Metrics," we can highlight as of 2026-03-16:

  • The use of this contribution in bookmarks, code forks, additions to favorite lists for recurrent reading, as well as general views, indicates that someone is using the publication as a basis for their current work. This may be a notable indicator of future more formal and academic citations. This claim is supported by the result of the "Capture" indicator, which yields a total of: 1 (PlumX).

It is essential to present evidence supporting full alignment with institutional principles and guidelines on Open Science and the Conservation and Dissemination of Intellectual Heritage. A clear example of this is:

  • The work has been submitted to a journal whose editorial policy allows open Open Access publication.
  • Assignment of a Handle/URN as an identifier within the deposit in the Institutional Repository: https://oa.upm.es/92635/

As a result of the publication of the work in the institutional repository, statistical usage data has been obtained that reflects its impact. In terms of dissemination, we can state that, as of
