Nakagin Capsule Tower: la arquitectura convertida en signo

Abstract

La arquitectura construye los lugares donde discurre la vida del hombre; también, iconos memorables. Algunos edificios nos llegan del pasado con una evidente carga significativa; a otros el significado se lo asignamos nosotros. ¿Qué pasa cuando al edificio se le atribuye un significado desde el presente? ¿Qué es más importante en él: su uso inicial o su calidad de signo atribuida? Este es el caso de las Nakagin Capsule Tower, de Kisho Kurokawa (1972), devenidas en «monumento» contemporáneo a pesar de no haber sido concebidas con esa cualidad. En este texto se propone una reflexión sobre la capacidad de la arquitectura contemporánea de generar elementos significativos. También es una reflexión sobre la relación uso-representación en los edificios convertidos en «monumentos» de la arquitectura del pasado reciente.
