Abstract
The authors examine several questions related to the amount of settlements induced by tunnel excavation (subsidence), the methods of calculation, as well as the first experiences gained through the current enlargement of the Madrid Subway Network. A method for estimating settlements is also proposed. The guidelines of the monitoring and instrumentation program implemented by the Comunidad de Madrid are presented. The aim of this program is the analysis of the actual behaviour of the works and to assure the best safety conditions.
