Abstract

GLOBAL - Global Linkage Over BroadbAnd Links will provide a virtual conference Centre using advanced communication technologies and concepts to support the promotion of e-infrastructure topics in Europe and around the world. The participating users will have the possibility to exchange information on e-infrastructure development in their region, identify partners for future collaboration and exchange and discuss synergies between their running initiatives. The GLOBAL project proposes the set up of an innovative Web 2.0-like Collaborative e-Infrastructure, called the Virtual Conference Centre, or shortly VCC, which will enable the regular realisation of virtual events. Virtual events are understood here as an on-line high-quality real-time event held in a Virtual Auditorium created by interconnecting over the Internet many rooms or auditoriums located anywhere in the world as shown in the figure. The Virtual Conference Centre will have the form of a social Web site facilitating not only the planning and realisation of virtual events, but also support reuse of past meetings, as well as networking, partnerships and other kinds of relationships among participants in the events. The Virtual Conference Centre will provide the following main functions: 1.The Event Planner: planning, coordination and preparation of virtual events. 2.The Virtual Auditorium: realisation of virtual events by real time interconnection of auditoriums over the Internet with TV like media integration. 3.The Event Repository: storage of event recordings, documents or participant profiles/interests for later reuse. 4.The Virtual Corridor: support of networking and partnership building amongst event participants. The GLOBAL project can be condensed in 4 objectives: Objective 1: Providing the Virtual Conference Centre Collaborative e-Infrastructure Objective 2: Realising of Global Networking Sessions Objective 3: Disseminating the Results and Providing Sustainability Objective 4: Providing Services for Third Parties GLOBAL´s output will promote the connection of European institutions with institutions in remote regions, encourage participation in and coordination between e-infrastructure projects, provide a broad coverage of the important stakeholders in the field and contribute to the international cooperation within the domain of e-infrastructures strengthening Europe´s position.
