Abstract
The cataloging of the coin referenced as CalOnza 148, identified as 8 escudos of Carlos II (1666, Sevilla), with R, is questioned. The aim of this article is to demonstrate that this coin should rather be cataloged as an 8 escudos coin under Felipe IV, and awarded to the assayer whose acronym is R (in fact, an ornate Carolingian capital R). To do this, their mint and assayer symbols are compared with those of another four 8 escudos coins, all of them minted under the rule of Felipe IV and awarded to say assayer. For the comparison, images from the specialized catalogs as La Onza and Oro Macuquino have been used. As an additional consequence of the study on this group of coins, a new adscription has been also proposed for other two coins: the 8 escudos referenced as Tauler 81a, and the 8 escudos referenced as Tauler 99/CalOnza 99, which it is believed should be kept under the same king, Felipe IV, but with a different assayer, R.
