Brief description ot the activity

José Manuel Vassallo is Professor at the Polytechnic University of Madrid and Director of TRANSyT-UPM from 10 July 2025. He is also a member of the academic staff of the Transport Research Centre (TRANSyT) where he leads the Transport Economics and Business Models research area. His research activity in recent years has focused on transport economics and financing, business models of transport services, new technologies applied to transport and socio-economic evaluation of transport policies. He has published 80 articles in JCR journals, almost half of them in the first quartile (Q1). His research has been cited by leading researchers such as Paul Krugman, Nobel laureate in economics. For four years he was associate editor of the journal Transport Policy (Q1 in the JCR). He has supervised 20 doctoral theses. He has been principal investigator in more than 25 research projects awarded in competitive calls. He has participated in several projects funded by the European Union. He is currently principal investigator for the UPM in the ADMIRAL project Advanced multimodal marketplace for low emission and energy transportation and GEMINI, Greening European Mobility Through Cascading Innovation INItiatives, awarded by the EU within the Horizon Europe programme. He has extensive relations with governments and industry. He currently coordinates the University Chair with industry (Abertis Foundation), and manages on behalf of the UPM a framework contract with CINTRA (within the FERROVIAL group). He was a research associate at the Kennedy School of Government (Harvard University). He is a current member of the Revenue and Finance Committee of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) and a member of the Advisory Board of the Spanish Ministry of Transport.
