Brief description ot the activity

Dr Khanh Nguyen holds a PhD from the Technical University of Madrid, awarded Cum Laude in July 2013. His doctoral studies were supported by an AECID scholarshipfrom 2009 to 2012. During this period, Dr Nguyen focused on the analysis of the dynamics of structures, railway tracks and their ageing, as well as materialnonlinearities. The main achievement of his thesis is the development of anovel implicit-explicit analysis methodology to predict railway trackdeterioration caused by repeated train loading, which allows for optimize trackmaintenance and preventing unnecessary interventions. Following that, Dr Nguyencontinued his research in Structural Health Monitoring for three years as apostdoctoral researcher at the Eduardo Torroja Institute (IETcc, CSIC). Later,he was a Research Associate for two years at ETSICCP-UPM, working on railway bridgedynamics. His first academic position as Assistant Professor started in April2018, and he was promoted to Associate Professor (Prof. Contratado Doctor) inFebruary 2023, where he works at the school of aeronautics ETSIAE-UPM. There,Dr Nguyen is leading an active and interdisciplinary collaboration withacademics at different institutions working on constitutive modelling ofmaterials at the continuum level and data-driven modelling.

Dr Khanh Nguyen is the author of more than 20 articles published in international journals (2/3 in Q1journals), 20 communications in conferences, and two book chapters. He is alsoa co-author of the registered software CALDINTAV, a specialised code for thedynamic analysis of railway bridges subject to train actions that is being usedby leading groups of researchers and engineering practitioners (e.g. TALGO). Hehas participated in 6 research projects funded by the Spanish Ministry, 1EU-funded research project on railway bridge dynamics and networkinteroperability, and 8 private contracts.

He is a member of theInternational Association of Wind Engineering (IAWE) and also a frequent reviewerfor prestigious scientific journals such as Engineering Structures, Journal ofSound and Vibration, among others. Dr Nguyen was a member of the scientific andorganising committees in the 2014 IABSE Congress 2014 and the 2018Conference on Structural Dynamics. He was also an evaluator of European Projectsin Panel Call H2020-NMBP-2019-single-stage.
