Japanese culture applied to engineering: The importance of Japanese Industrial Design

Resumen

Industrial design has gained in recent years a high importance in the development of engineering and has become a fusion tool between manufacturing methods and artistic creation focused on users, becoming a discipline of high interest in this sector. The different societies of the world create completely different products from their needs and concepts, despite sharing the same function. It is this aesthetics and mentality focused on a single group that attracts the rest of consumers and seeks to understand the cognitive development behind that product. However, this process of ideas, normally rooted in the customs and traditional knowledge of this society, is reproduced in other industrial sectors such as automotive, technology, furniture, architecture, crafts or graphic design. The more you delve into these branches, the more insight you get that all these areas are interconnected thanks to industrial design, which is governed by traditional, technological and sociological components of the time. This study investigates the importance of the Japanese mentality and culture applied to different sectors of engineering, focused from the point of view of industrial design; where different engineering fields and the influences received from outside the Japanese country, with their subsequent personal export to the world, are analyzed. To fulfill these purposes, the objective of this study is to create a framework and a documentation base in the different sectors with their respective influences on Japanese society, classifying and delving into different authors and works while contextualizing themselves with respect to its time and historical situation. The unification of all the concepts that are collected independently of the different groups that are analyzed, to interpret and find connections with the rest of the sectors studied, either in the perceived mentality, the development of processes or any other factor, similar in manufacturing or end goal. The study of these areas not as separate entities from each other, but as a similar and homogeneous set, thus developing a base that categorizes all these similarities and interconnections.

Impacto bibliométrico. Análisis de la aportación y canal de difusión

El trabajo ha sido publicado en la revista Ardin : Arte, Diseño E Ingeniería debido a la progresión y el buen impacto que ha alcanzado en los últimos años, según la agencia Dialnet (Dialnet Métricas). En el año de publicación del trabajo, 2023, consiguiendo con ello situarse como revista Q1 (Primer Cuartil).

Destacable, igualmente, el hecho de que la Revista está posicionada clasificada como C en otras agencias nacionales como CIRC.

Impacto y visibilidad social

Desde la dimensión de Influencia o adopción social, y tomando como base las métricas asociadas a las menciones e interacciones proporcionadas por agencias especializadas en el cálculo de las denominadas “Métricas Alternativas o Sociales”, podemos destacar a fecha 2025-12-21:

  • La utilización de esta aportación en marcadores, bifurcaciones de código, añadidos a listas de favoritos para una lectura recurrente, así como visualizaciones generales, indica que alguien está usando la publicación como base de su trabajo actual. Esto puede ser un indicador destacado de futuras citas más formales y académicas. Tal afirmación es avalada por el resultado del indicador “Capture” que arroja un total de: 4 (PlumX).

Es fundamental presentar evidencias que respalden la plena alineación con los principios y directrices institucionales en torno a la Ciencia Abierta y la Conservación y Difusión del Patrimonio Intelectual. Un claro ejemplo de ello es:

  • El trabajo se ha enviado a una revista cuya política editorial permite la publicación en abierto Open Access.
  • Además, el trabajo se ha enviado a una revista clasificada como Diamante en relación con este tipo de política editorial.
  • Asignación de un Handle/URN como identificador dentro del Depósito en el Repositorio Institucional: https://oa.upm.es/91477/

Como resultado de la publicación del trabajo en el repositorio institucional, se han obtenido datos estadísticos de uso que reflejan su impacto. En términos de difusión, podemos afirmar que, hasta la fecha
