Resumen
The Air-to-Air Refuelling (AAR) operation is a complex manoeuver in which a tanker aircraft transfers fuel at a high rate to a receiver while flying in close formation. This challenging operation requires to be accomplished by expert pilots and Aerial Refuelling Operators (AROs) with intensive training, and push the industry to develop automatic systems to reduce human effort and to improve the safety of the operation. Despite this effort, unintentional contacts between the refuelling boom and the receiver aircraft are still possible during aerial refuelling operations. The objective of this paper is to present alternative methods to assess the contact force in these events to ensure the safety of operation: (1) Explicit simulation using finite element analysis, (2) a non-linear model of the boom using the Increased Order Modelling technique and (3) the enhanced flight simulator to include boom elastic effects. Each method proves to have its own application of interest. © Proceedings of the International Forum of Aeroelasticity and Structural Dynamics 2022, IFASD 2022.
