Resumen
Spillways with highly converging chutes are an innovative type of spillway that increases discharge capacity compared to standard designs. They are also a suitable solution as protection against erosion for unlined abutments close to the downstream toe of the dam. However, in order to apply this solution it is necessary to carry out a specific study for each particular case, as there are no general design guidelines. In order to draw up general design criteria, the CALA research project is being developed. In this article, the first results of the project are shown, related to the behavior of spillways with highly converging asymmetric chutes and stilling basins with impact blocks. In accordance with the criteria obtained, a design has been proposed for the reconstruction of the emergency spillway of the Oroville dam, based on 3D numerical simulations.
