Resumen
This chapter aims to review three techniques for achieving lightweight cement-based materials. The first is a widely used one, the addition of low-weight/low-resistance aggregates. We present a wide literature review of lightweight concrete with a synthetic aggregates such as expanded polystyrene and different ways to enhance the cement matrix to avoid the well-known resistance loss. The second approach consists of adding to the cement-based materials, low-weight/high-resistance aggregates such as hollow glass microspheres. These are relatively new in the market, provide amazing results, and have been used mostly for oil well cementing. Regarding oil well cementing, the third approach considers a traditional technique for lightening oil well cement slurries. This consists of increasing the water-to-cement ratio with the aid of extenders or lightweight additives, which reduce the mobility of water, avoiding segregation.
