Descripción Breve de Actividad Realizada
Professor at the Civil Engineering School (Technical University of Madrid, UPM) since 2006. He did his PhD thesis on land use planning for water services at the University of Costa Rica (2001-04), where he made contact with the scientific cooperation beginning a long term collaboration in the Central American Region. During postdoctoral stage he worked on desertification control in the RECONDES project (2006-2007) coordinated by Prof. Janet Hooke at the University of Portsmouth (UK). Since 2005 he has developed and intense scientific activity in the field of Geomatics and River Restoration, in the frame of the Hydrobiology Research Group. He develops research projects within international networks in Central America (University of Costa Rica), UK (Universities of Portsmouth and Liverpool), Portugal (University of Lisbon) and Brazil (UNESP). Since 2007 he is the Spanish coordinator of the Water and Forest Community Program in Central America (CAB Centroamérica), a scientific alliance with Universities and Institutions from Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Honduras with the objective of increasing the knowledge and resilience of water supply systems in the Region. Since 2008, Miguel Marchamalo is leading the research line on Water and Geomatics, at the Lab of Topography and Geomatics (UPM). Within this frame several PhD thesis and publications have been done in the field of Infrastructure Monitoring, especially Dams. Technologies as GPS-GNSS, Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) and DInSAR have been calibrated and validated.
The researcher has two recognized research six-year terms and one six-year technology transfer term. The researcher's scientific production includes 67 publications indexed in the Web of Science, 8 articles in journals indexed in other databases with peer review, 3 complete books, 10 book chapters, 81 communications in international congresses, and 9 presentations in technical conferences. These works have been cited 668 times (Publons-Web of Science) with an h-index of 14. Miguel has collaborated to raise 1.5 million euro in research projects, with over 250.000 euro as principal investigator.
The researcher has one six-year technology transfer term recognized, based on the activities developed in international scientific cooperation, technology transfer and innovation for human development. Within CAB-Centroamerica (Water and Forest Community Program in Central America) more than 15 MSc thesis has been done, mostly in rural communities, collaborating in the design of more resilient and adapted water supply and sanitation systems.
He is a founding partner of the technology-based companies Ecohidraulica (2005-) and Detektia Earth Surface Monitoring (2019-). He also is a founding member of the Centre for Innovation in Technology for Human Development (itdUPM) and, since 2018 is the Head of Education at EIT Climate KIC-UPM node.
Prof. Marchamalo is supervisor in four PhD programs (Structures, Materials & Foundations UPM, Advanced Forestry Eng. UPM, Geomatics Engineering UPM and the International program PhD Fluvio, coordinated by the University of Lisbon). He has supervised ten doctoral theses in Spain, Portugal and Brazil. Prof. Miguel Marchamalo has also experience in supervising Industrial Doctorates, with one PhD thesis defended and a recent concession of a Grant for new PhD in collaboration with startup Detektia Earth Surface Monitoring (Madrid Region Industrial Doctorate Call 2020-2023).
