Descripción Breve de Actividad Realizada
My academic education includes an MSc degree in Forestry Engineering
(2009) and a PhD in Advanced Forest
Research (2015) from the Technical University of Madrid (UPM). After
completing my PhD, I moved to the Laboratory of Plant Ecology from Ghent
University (UGent, Belgium) for almost five years, three of them as an FWO [PEGASUS]2-Marie
Sklodowoska-Curie Fellow. I returned to the UPM in 2020 with a \"Juan
de la Cierva - Incorporación\" grant, followed by a \"Ramón y
Cajal\" fellowship (senior type) in 2023 (current appointment).
During my PhD stage, my research
focused on sub-mediterranean oak coppice
forests, with a particular interest in the clonal structure of resprouting
species, dendrochronology, and plant physiology. During my postdoctoral stages, I
specialised in tree stem respiration and
hydraulics, carbon transport tracking through state-of-the-art isotopic techniques, and plant process-based modelling. My research
training has been complemented with nine
international research stays; four predoctoral stays at the University of
Georgia (USA, three months), Université de Québec en Abitibi-Temiscaminge
(Canada, two months), Institute of Dendrology of the Polish Academy of Sciences
(Poland, one month), and UGent (Belgium, two months), and five postdoctoral
stays at the Centre
d\'Ecologie Fonctionnelle et Evolutive (France, one month), the Hawkesbury
Institute for Environment (Australia, three months), the Max Plank Institute
for Biogeochemistry (Germany, one month), and UMR Écologie des Forêts de Guyane
(French Guyane, two weeks) and INRA-PIAF-Université Clermont-Auvergne (France,
ten days). Such intense transnational mobility has contributed to developing
new competencies, acquiring a wider scientific perspective, and establishing a broad international scientific
network. Illustratively,
I am the first author of a paper
published by Nature Communications
summarising the results of a European network of dendrometer data.
I have
experience attracting funding from national and international competitive
calls. I was selected for a Marie-Curie Individual Fellowship (2016 call) and a
scholarship within the programme \"Atracción de Talento\" of the
Community of Madrid (2019 call). I turned down these two highly competitive
grants due to incompatibility with funding achieved in simultaneously applied
calls. Moreover, I have received funding for projects from the Flanders
Research Foundation (FWO) as a principal investigator, from UGent (Special
Research Fund, BOF) to co-supervise a PhD, and from the Spanish Ministry of
Science and Innovation (MICINN) as a principal investigator (108.900 EUR). I
presented a research proposal in the ERC Starting Grant (call 2022) with the
ambition of starting my research group, but my proposal was not selected for
funding.
In
parallel with my research activities, I have performed teaching assignments as a co-lecturer in MSc courses from UGent
(2017-2020). I currently assist in teaching activities in three BSc and MSc
courses at UPM (2020-2023). I also
mentor young researchers. I have supervised a final MSc thesis at the UPM,
co-supervised two PhD theses at UGent, and am currently co-supervising three
more PhD candidates. I belong to the editorial board of Frontiers in Plant Biophysics and Modelling and the review board of Tree Physiology. I frequently review manuscripts for other journals indexed in the JCR (41, according to the WOS).
Likewise, I have participated as a scientific
evaluator for the 2021 call \"Proyectos de Generación de Conocimiento\" programme (call 2021, MICINN - EVALUA, Spain) and in the Emmy Noether
Programme (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinchaft, Germany), one PhD dissertation
thesis, and five MSc thesis (UGent). Finally, I obtained accreditation for Profesor Contratado Doctor by the
Spanish National Agency for Quality Evaluation and Accreditation (ANECA), and
as Investigador I3 by the Spanish Ministry of Universities (2023).
